Disillusioned with Social Media?

There have been a few things that I have taken note of over the last few months that I want to share with all of you:

  • A few months ago I joined a local chamber of commerce. I asked if it would be possible to do a presentation about the importance of social media, and I was told that some other company had done one a few months prior and that they didn’t think it was a great idea to do another presentation at the moment.
  • I’ve noticed several clients who have either dropped off the face of the earth or have just put their social media campaigns on the back burner due to their busy time constraints.
  • I’ve noticed many local businesses in the area where I live have their own Facebook fanpages, but they do their own postings and they do not update often enough. Another thing that I’ve noticed is that many of these companies do not have updated websites or blogs or a presence on twitter.

This leaves me to pose the question “Are we becoming disillusioned with social media?

Maybe the answer to the question is that we are tired of seeing the same old thing on many of the same websites out there. Business websites with generic, boring copy that doesn’t send a strong enough call to action for potential customers to actually make a purchase.

Worse, have we just gotten tired of surfing the web and not seeing anything out of the ordinary?

In my opinion, it’s a little bit of both actually.

If you are a business owner with a website or blog which is just a cookie cutter site like many others, you may have noticed a drop in your site’s traffic, a drop in sales or potentially both.

Take a good look at your site’s content. Is your site updated often; say at least twice a week?

Are you integrating twitter and Facebook in with your website traffic efforts?

If you’ve become disillusioned with social media, it may show on your site, and when you become disillusioned with your site…so will potential customers.
